Amongst the scavengers: A terrible beauty?

A photo in the National Geographic 2012 Photography Competition caught my attention this morning. The photo, titled Amongst the Scavengers, won first place for people.

If you don’t read the actual setting where the photo was taken, possibly you might think, like I did, how beautiful the picture is. The muted autumnal colors, the stratus clouds stretching into the background, and how perfectly coordinated the colors of the women’s dress is with the overall hues in the picture. I’ll post it here without the caption first.

Amongst the Scavengers

The reality of this beautiful picture is that these women are rummaging through a garbage heap in Dandora in Kenya, and there is nothing beautiful about being reduced to such an act of survival.
